The smokehouse boasts a bell tower cupola atop the utility shed, lending charm and style to the roof of the building.  It could be reached by climbing an open staircase inside the building.  Family lore says the bell was rung when Indians were seen in the area, a warning for the children to hide.

The cupola helped provide ventilation, prevented mildew growth and controlled odors.  Originally there were louvers to let the air circulate.  These were later boarded up.

Below are images looking up at the base of the cupola.  No restoration work planned for this area, but the detailed photographs, especially the wooden pegs, are quite interesting.
